Fort Attaway

The remains of Fort Attaway are on the hill where Sumo Restaurant now stands on Highway 27. This was the location of the Battle of Rome on May 17, 1864. This battle was the largest in Rome and the only battle within the city limits. Not only was Fort Attaway used as Rome’s first line of defense to the north and west, it is believed that the fort once stretched from the Oostanaula River to the present location of Shorter University, where cannon placements are still visible today. Once captured by Union troops, Fort Attaway was used to fire upon the remaining two Confederate occupied forts in Rome until their fall.
