Celebrating our Country’s Independence in Georgia’s Rome

First Friday Block Party

Two-hundred and thirty-nine years ago on July 4, 1776, our nation declared to the world its existence. Now nearly 240 years later we celebrate the birth of our nation and our freedom.

Rome kicks off the festivities early on July 3 with the First Friday Concert in Downtown Rome starting at 7 p.m. featuring Tim Reynolds & Friends. Cave Spring will also start the fun on July 3 at 9 p.m. with fireworks in downtown. On the 4^th, Cave Spring will host an Independence Day Parade at 9:00 a.m. in downtown.

Rome will have a large number of things happening on the Fourth of July. The Fort Norton Civil War Living History event will begin at 10:00 a.m. on July 4 and continue through July 5.  Demonstrations on how civil war soldiers lived, fought, ate, and worshiped will the featured.  Honestly, this is the event I am most looking forward to, being an amateur historian.

Starting at 6:00 p.m. is the Salute to America fireworks event at Ridge Ferry Park. Food, fun, and children’s activities will be plentiful. Cedartown country music artist Preston Summerville will perform a free concert leading up to the fireworks at 9:45 p.m., which will include the National Anthem performed by Jill Brooks and the presentation of the colors by the Greater Rome Area Young Marines.

Rolling on the River Sunday Cruise

For some colorful adventure, there will be the Color Me Free 5K run/walk, suitable for all ages. Since this race is not timed, it’s great for the beginning runner and for those seeking a unique race experience.  On the trail there are “color stations” every mile, and at the finish line you will be showered in colors. The race begins at 7:00 p.m. and the course utilizes the Heritage Trail system.

Starting at 8:30 p.m. and going until midnight at The Dark Side of the Moon on Broad Street is the Jennifer Brantley concert. There will be fine music, food, and locally crafted beers to enjoy.

Rome offers so many ways to celebrate, I will do my patriotic duty to our great country by celebrating  the Fourth of July in Floyd County.
