FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Civil War Symposium series to close out year with author Larry Stephens
ROME, GA. — Author Larry Stephens will present the final Civil War Symposium of the year on Thursday, Nov. 7 to the general public.
His lecture will focus on the subject matter of his book entitled “John P. Gatewood: Confederate Bushwacker”, published in 2012.
Stephens will speak to both sides of the public perception of Gatewood, both as a dedicated soldier and a cold-blooded killer.
After abandoning his duties with the Confederate army and returning home, Gatewood joined forces with a group of guerillas, wreaking havoc on Union sympathizers and seeking vengeance for the death of his mother and sister.
Larry Stephens is an assistant librarian for public services at Georgia Highlands College in Rome. His initial interest in John P. Gatewood was piqued upon finding there to be little information on the violent life of the outlaw.
The symposium will take place in the Coosa Room of the Rome-Floyd County Library at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of “John P. Gatewood: Confederate Bushwacker” will be available for sale at the lecture.
The Civil War Symposium series is sponsored by the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau and hosted by the Rome-Floyd County Library. The goal of the series is to educate the community on the area’s rich Civil War history during the sesquicentennial of the war.
