Textile History Day to be held at Chieftains Museum

ROME, GA. — The Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia will host a Textile History Day at Chieftains Museum on this Saturday, July 21.

Representatives will be collecting the history of Rome’s mill communities through oral stories and old photographs. Both former mill workers and family members are invited to bring their stories for inclusion.

Stories and photos will be cataloged into the research of the Center for Public History. The center is currently working on developing a Textile Heritage Trail throughout Northwest Georgia highlighting the great influence of the textile industry throughout the region.

Recently, a portion of the trail through Carrollton, Ga., debuted. One completed, the heritage tourism trail will journey from Columbus to Dalton in West Georgia.

Former mill workers and family members are asked to bring stories and photos to the Grizzard Center at Chieftains Museum from 10:00am to 2:30pm. The Grizzard Center is a former “boss house” for the Chatillion Silk Mill (now Celanese Corporation) that still stands nearby.
