Freedom Garden

Freedom Garden – Honoring the Civil Rights Movement in Rome

The Freedom Garden is a tribute to the brave demonstrators of Rome’s Civil Rights Movement and was officially dedicated on December 8, 2007. The garden tells the powerful story of students from Main High School who, on March 28, 1963, held “sit-in” demonstrations at downtown lunch counters in a courageous stand for equal and human rights. Informational signage at the garden entrance highlights key moments in the desegregation of public facilities and institutions in Rome.

Location:
The garden can be accessed from the parking lot behind the Carnegie building. The gated entrance is located to the left of the building.
