Covington Park History
Covington Park is named in honor of Bill Covington, a Vietnam War Veteran and former Rome resident. Bill Covington’s family donated the land to Darlington School. They in turn donated it to the city of Rome. Covington attended Darlington before going off to war in Vietnam; he was killed in action and his body was never recovered.
As part of honoring his memory, a planned military plaza will recognize and honor all branches of the military. A Blue Star marker and a Gold Star marker will be affixed to the site. The Blue Star will memorialize veterans while the Gold Star will memorialize the family members of those who served.
The location of the park was once the home to Anchor Duck Mill. The mill was razed after it closed in 1958. The mill opened in 1900 and manufactured cotton duck, a heavy-duty cloth.
