Just one tank of gas away from Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Birmingham, Rome is an exciting vacation destination for those wanting a retreat. To help out the travelers, we’ve put together a list of things to do on one tank of gas in Rome!

1. Float on One of our Rivers!

With three rivers and a multitude of creeks and lakes, there’s always an aquatic, outdoor adventure waiting to be explored. With venues like River Dog Paddle Company, River Ratz, and Cedar Creek to supply equipment, all that’s needed is the one tank of gas to get you there!

2. Visit a Museum!

The Chieftains Museum– originally the home of Major Ridge.

With such a vibrant history, it’s no surprise that Rome is filled with different museums. The Duke Museum of Military History contains information and artifacts dating back before World War I where the Rome Area History Museum boasts a wonderful overview of Rome through the ages. Aviation enthusiasts can also check out the Museum of Flight at the Russel B. Airport!

But that’s far from all! Visit the home of Berry College founder Martha Berry at Oak Hill or delve deeper into the Native American History of Rome by touring the Chieftains Museum— the former home of Major Ridge!

3. Climb one of our Famous Hills!

The tranquil meditation garden at Myrtle Hill.

Rome is well known for its seven hills so why not explore one? Visit the Meditation Garden at Myrtle Hill after you explore the various historical tombs and gravestones with the help of our Myrtle Hill Cemetery Mobile App Tour.  There are so many fascinating markers to see– not to mention the incredible gravesite of former First Lady Ellen Axson Wilson! You can also take a self-guided tour of the various rare species of trees that are located on Myrtle Hill through our Myrtle Hill Cemetery Tree Tour guide.

Looking for more outdoor adventure? Tackle the trails on Jackson Hill and purchase a souvenir at The Last Stop Gift Shop before you leave! Or marvel at the fantastic Clocktower on Clocktower Hill and take a look at the Victorian houses in our Between the Rivers District!

4. Grab a Bite!

A delicious dish from Harvest Moon!

From BBQ to Thai Food, Rome is home to all kinds of tastes! With unique eateries like Jamwich, Schroeder’s, Harvest Moon, and Roma Mia, there’s something for everyone. By travelling to Rome, you’ll be able to dine at a location completely unique to the city. Don’t forget about dessert!

To get a truly special experience, plan your trip around one of our Flavor Tours!

5. See a Show!

Interested in the arts? See the Rome Little Theatre put on a play at the Historic Desoto or watch a ballet at the Rome City Auditorium!  Here in  Rome, we are so lucky to have our very own Rome Symphony Orchestra, which is the oldest symphony in the South. With events year-round, music lovers will swoon over the amazing sounds of our local symphony.
